Erectile Dysfunction

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common form of a sexual problem among the male population. This is also referred to as impotence when the person is unable to get or keep an erection for sexual function. Among the healthy males when sexually aroused, the blood flow to the penis naturally increases. The blood flow enters the erection chambers and stays there. This pressure of the blood in the chambers makes the penis firm and after the orgasm, the blood flows out and as the result, the penis returns back to being soft and limp. ED can be caused by other ailments such as nerve damage or clogged blood vessel. It can also be an early warning indication of serious illness such as high blood pressure or high blood sugar, hence it is important to get medical advice. This appears to be a common condition as individual’s age, although it is not associated with the normal ageing process.

Causes

The male sexual arousal is a process that involves the hormones, nerves, muscles, blood vessels and the brain. A problem in any one of these can result in erectile dysfunction. This can also occur as the result of low blood flow, penis unable to retain the blood during an erection or problems with the nerves in the penis. Some of the factors that increase the risk of developing ED include being over the age of 50, smoking, lack of exercise, alcohol abuse, high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol and other heart ailments. In addition, emotional causes can also result in ED and can include depression, concern about sexual performance and stress.

Symptoms

This can include trouble with getting or keeping an erection and reduced sexual need. It is important to seek medical assistance, particularly when it is accompanied with ejaculatory dysfunction, diabetes and heart condition.

Diagnosis

Identifying the cause of ED can ensure the best treatment option is available which can improve the quality of life. The physician may ask about the individual’s lifestyle habits, their health, and the history of ED. A physical evaluation can consist of checking the blood pressure, testicles, the penis and a rectal examination. The diagnosis can also include various blood and urine tests. Erectile function test help determines the function of the blood vessels, tissues and muscles of the penis. Imaging tests can check blood flow and identify signs of clogged arteries.

Treatment

This is usually focused on treating the underlying cause and by providing ED medications or with surgical intervention. Depending on the cause, changes in the lifestyle can solve the issue such as increasing physical activity and quit smoking. In some cases, when other medications may cause this condition, changing the medication is advised. There are various types of ED medication that can be orally taken or inserted into the urethra which works by relaxing the smooth muscles and increasing the blood flow to the penis.
