When any part of the female reproductive system becomes affected, this condition is referred to as the female genital disease. This can consist of a variety of problems such as endometriosis, follicular cyst of the ovary, cervical polyp, candida vulvovaginitis, vaginitis, female genital sores, pelvic congestion syndrome, vulvitis and vulvar cancer. One of the common problems that affect women is the vaginal conditions that can create various symptoms such as discharge, abnormal bleeding, pain and itching.
Female genital sores
These are the lesions that occur around the vagina which may be itchy, tender, painful or can produce the discharge. This commonly develops as the result of sexually transmitted infection. In addition, the sores can also produce symptoms such as discomfort with urinating, pelvic pain and bleeding. Some of the sexually transmitted infections that can cause the sores include genital herpes, syphilis, genital warts and chancroid. It can also develop as the result of other conditions such as sensitivity to skin irritants (contact dermatitis) and from the inflammation of the vulva and the vagina (vulvovaginitis). The treatment is usually based on the underlying cause and can include pain relievers, antibiotics or anti-itching medications.
Vaginitis
This is the inflammation of the vagina that commonly occurs as the result of an imbalance in the vaginal bacteria or from an infection. Some of the common forms of vaginitis include yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis and trichomoniasis. The symptoms of this condition include pain during sexual intercourse, vaginal bleeding or spotting, pain with urination, discharge from the vagina and itching. The treatment for the yeast infection consists of antifungal medications or creams that can be applied on the vagina.
Vulvovaginal candidiasis
This is an infection or an inflammation that affects the vulva and the vagina. It is estimated that around 50% of women over the age of 25 can experience the vulvovaginal candidiasis. Some of the common cause of an infection includes yeast, viruses, bacteria, sexually transmitted infections and exposure to irritant chemicals. Some of the symptoms of this condition include foul-smelling vaginal discharge, inflammation of the vulva and the vagina, discomfort with urination, itching and irritation of the genital area. The treatment is based on the cause and can consist of oral antibiotics, antibacterial or antifungal creams, antibiotic creams and oral antifungal medications.
Cervical polyps
Cervical polys develop on the cervix that opens into the vagina. This can vary in size from 1 centimeter to 2 centimeters and are usually non-cancerous although they are examined under the microscope for signs of cancer. The symptoms include bleeding after sexual intercourse, heavy menstruation periods, bleeding in-between periods and foul smelling discharge. The treatment consists of the surgical removal of the polyps with an instrument known as polyp forceps. The individual is also administered pain medication to relieve the discomfort or the pain after the surgery.
