UniProt Comments for CES1

CES1: Involved in the detoxification of xenobiotics and in the activation of ester and amide prodrugs. Hydrolyzes aromatic and aliphatic esters, but has no catalytic activity toward amides or a fatty acyl-CoA ester. Hydrolyzes the methyl ester group of cocaine to form benzoylecgonine. Catalyzes the transesterification of cocaine to form cocaethylene. Displays fatty acid ethyl ester synthase activity, catalyzing the ethyl esterification of oleic acid to ethyloleate. Belongs to the type-B carboxylesterase/lipase family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: EC 3.1.1.1; EC 3.1.1.56; Hydrolase; Xenobiotic Metabolism - drug metabolism - other enzymes

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 8 C5|8 45.29 cM

Cellular Component: extracellular space

Biological Process: regulation of gene expression
