UniProt Comments for ARF1

ARF1: GTP-binding protein that functions as an allosteric activator of the cholera toxin catalytic subunit, an ADP- ribosyltransferase. Involved in protein trafficking among different compartments. Modulates vesicle budding and uncoating within the Golgi complex. Deactivation induces the redistribution of the entire Golgi complex to the endoplasmic reticulum, suggesting a crucial role in protein trafficking. In its GTP-bound form, its triggers the association with coat proteins with the Golgi membrane. The hydrolysis of ARF1-bound GTP, which is mediated by ARFGAPs proteins, is required for dissociation of coat proteins from Golgi membranes and vesicles. Belongs to the small GTPase superfamily. Arf family.

Protein type: G protein; G protein, monomeric, ARF; G protein, monomeric; Motility/polarity/chemotaxis

Cellular Component: COPI-coated vesicle; cytosol; endomembrane system; focal adhesion; Golgi apparatus; Golgi membrane; late endosome; leading edge; neuron projection; perinuclear region of cytoplasm; peroxisomal membrane; postsynaptic density; postsynaptic membrane; sarcomere; trans-Golgi network

Molecular Function: GDP binding; GTP binding; magnesium ion binding; protein binding; protein homodimerization activity

Biological Process: actin filament organization; cellular copper ion homeostasis; Golgi to transport vesicle transport; positive regulation of calcium ion-dependent exocytosis; positive regulation of catalytic activity; positive regulation of endocytosis; positive regulation of protein secretion; protein transport; regulation of receptor internalization; small GTPase mediated signal transduction; vesicle-mediated transport
