NCBI Summary for CPEB1

This gene encodes a member of the cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein family. This highly conserved protein binds to a specific RNA sequence, called the cytoplasmic polyadenylation element, found in the 3' untranslated region of some mRNAs. The encoded protein functions in both the cytoplasm and the nucleus. It is involved in the regulation of mRNA translation, as well as processing of the 3' untranslated region, and may play a role in cell proliferation and tumorigenesis. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. [provided by RefSeq, Jan 2014]

UniProt Comments for CPEB1

CPEB: cytoplasmic polyadenylation element binding protein 1. Binds to the protein CPE and drives its polyadenylation. Activated by the protein kinase AurA. Insulin and progesterone stimulate AurA-catalyzed phosphorylation of CPEB in oocytes. Neuronal CPEB regulates local protein synthesis and stabilizes synapse-specific long-term facilitation in aplysia.

Protein type: Translation; RNA-binding

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 15q25.2

Cellular Component: postsynaptic membrane; cytoplasm; dendrite; postsynaptic density; cell junction; nucleus

Molecular Function: metal ion binding; translation repressor activity, nucleic acid binding; nucleotide binding

Biological Process: synaptonemal complex assembly; cellular response to insulin stimulus; mRNA processing; regulation of neuronal synaptic plasticity
