NCBI Summary for THIH

Anaerobically, glycine probably cannot be oxidized to form the probable thiamine biosynthetic intermediate dehydroglycine, so it is derived from tyrosine by the action of the tyrosine lyase ThiH; the products of the in vitro ThiH reaction are para-cresol and hydroglycine (Kriek, 2007). [More information is available at EcoGene: EG11590]. The ThiGH complex catalyzes the conversion of 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate to a thiazole as part of thiamine synthesis. [More information is available at EcoCyc: EG11590].

UniProt Comments for THIH

Catalyzes the radical-mediated cleavage of tyrosine to 2-iminoacetate and 4-cresol.
