NCBI Summary for PMEPA1

This gene encodes a transmembrane protein that contains a Smad interacting motif (SIM). Expression of this gene is induced by androgens and transforming growth factor beta, and the encoded protein suppresses the androgen receptor and transforming growth factor beta signaling pathways though interactions with Smad proteins. Overexpression of this gene may play a role in multiple types of cancer. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed for this gene. UniProt Comments for PMEPA1

TMEPAI: Involved in down-regulation of the androgen receptor (AR). Enhances ubiquitination and proteasome-mediated degradation of AR, probably by recruiting NEDD4. Belongs to the PMEPA1 family. 2 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Membrane protein, integral

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 20q13.31-q13.33

Cellular Component: early endosome membrane; endosome membrane; Golgi membrane; intracellular membrane-bound organelle; nucleoplasm; plasma membrane

Molecular Function: protein binding; WW domain binding

Biological Process: negative regulation of transforming growth factor beta receptor signaling pathway
