UniProt Comments for Conolysin-Mt1

Function: This cytolytic peptide has ability to disrupt the integrity of cell membranes from both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. It permeabilizes both negatively charged prokaryotic (PE:PG) and zwitterionic eukaryotic (PC:cholesterol) model membranes. It has potent hemolytic activity on human erythrocytes and exhibits low antimicrobial activity against the Gram-negative bacterium E.coli (MIC>50 µM) and the Gram-positive bacterium S.aureus (MIC=25-50 µM). Intracranial injection causes mice to shuffle backward until the encounter an obstacle, at which time the mouse jump into the air. The backward shuffle is reminiscent to the signature dance 'moonwalk' that gained widespread popularity after being performed by Michael Jackson. Ref.1

Subcellular location: Secreted Ref.1.

Tissue specificity: Expressed by the venom duct. Ref.1

Miscellaneous: The mature peptide does not contain cysteine residue.Mt1 and Mt2 peptides are found in a ratio of 1:4. Mt1 is more active when intracranially injected.

Mass spectrometry: Molecular mass is 2750.40 Da from positions 1 - 23. Determined by MALDI. Ref.1Molecular mass is 2692.45 Da from positions 1 - 22. Determined by MALDI. Ref.1
