UniProt Comments for GUCY2C

GUCY2C: Receptor for the E.coli heat-stable enterotoxin (E.coli enterotoxin markedly stimulates the accumulation of cGMP in mammalian cells expressing GC-C). Also activated by the endogenous peptide guanylin. Defects in GUCY2C are the cause of diarrhea type 6 (DIAR6). A relatively mild, early-onset chronic diarrhea that may be associated with increased susceptibility to inflammatory bowel disease, small-bowel obstruction, and esophagitis. Defects in GUCY2C are a cause of meconium ileus (MECIL). A condition characterized by a intestinal obstruction due to inspissated meconium in the distal ileum and cecum, which develops in utero and presents shortly after birth as a failure to pass meconium. Meconium ileus is a known clinical manifestation of cystic fibrosis. Belongs to the adenylyl cyclase class-4/guanylyl cyclase family.

Protein type: Protein kinase, RGC; Nucleotide Metabolism - purine; Guanylyl cyclase; Protein kinase, dual-specificity (receptor); Kinase, protein; EC 4.6.1.2; Membrane protein, integral; Lyase; Receptor, misc.; RGC group; RGC family

Cellular Component: membrane; endoplasmic reticulum; plasma membrane; integral to membrane

Molecular Function: toxin binding; guanylate cyclase activity; phosphorus-oxygen lyase activity; GTP binding; transferase activity, transferring phosphorus-containing groups; nucleotide binding; lyase activity; ATP binding; protein kinase activity

Biological Process: cGMP biosynthetic process; cyclic nucleotide biosynthetic process; response to toxin; protein amino acid phosphorylation; regulation of cell proliferation
