Heregulin is a glycoprotein, containing immunoglobulin-like and EGF-like domains, that is produced as a transmembrane proform and is expressed by a variety of cell types including neurons, astrocytes, fibroblasts and keratinocytes. At least 12 different heregulin isoforms, resulting from alternative splicing from a single gene, have been identified. The isoforms differ in the N-terminal, EGF-like, juxtamembrane domains and in the cytoplasmic tail.
