NCBI Summary for GCN5

KAT2A, or GCN5, is a histone acetyltransferase (HAT) that functions primarily as a transcriptional activator. It also functions as a repressor of NF-kappa-B (see MIM 164011) by promoting ubiquitination of the NF-kappa-B subunit RELA (MIM 164014) in a HAT-independent manner (Mao et al., 2009 [PubMed 19339690]).[supplied by OMIM, Sep 2009]

UniProt Comments for GCN5

GCN5: an ubiquitous histone acetyltransferase that promotes transcriptional activation. Acetylation of histones gives a specific tag for epigenetic transcription activation. Has significant histone acetyltransferase activity with core histones, but not with nucleosome core particles. Interacts with P300, CBP, ADA2, and is a component of the TFTC-HAT complex. Two splice variant isoforms have been described.

Protein type: EC 2.3.1.48; Acetyltransferase

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 17q21

Cellular Component: extracellular space; nuclear chromatin; nucleoplasm

Molecular Function: chromatin binding; H3 histone acetyltransferase activity; histone acetyltransferase activity; histone deacetylase binding; protein binding; protein phosphatase binding; transcription coactivator activity; transcription factor binding

Biological Process: cardiac muscle cell differentiation; cell proliferation; chromatin remodeling; histone deubiquitination; in utero embryonic development; intracellular distribution of mitochondria; metencephalon development; midbrain development; multicellular organism growth; neural tube closure; positive regulation of cell projection organization and biogenesis; positive regulation of gene expression, epigenetic; positive regulation of histone acetylation; regulation of protein stability; regulation of transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; response to nutrient levels; response to organic cyclic substance; somitogenesis; telencephalon development; transcription from RNA polymerase II promoter; viral reproduction
