NCBI Summary for TNC

extracellular matrix glycoprotein; inhibits the attachment of fibroblasts to adhesive proteins [RGD, Feb 2006]

UniProt Comments for TNC

TNC: Extracellular matrix protein implicated in guidance of migrating neurons as well as axons during development, synaptic plasticity as well as neuronal regeneration. Promotes neurite outgrowth from cortical neurons grown on a monolayer of astrocytes. Ligand for integrins alpha-8/beta-1, alpha-9/beta-1, alpha-V/beta-3 and alpha-V/beta-6. Belongs to the tenascin family. 6 isoforms of the human protein are produced by alternative splicing.

Protein type: Motility/polarity/chemotaxis; Secreted; Secreted, signal peptide

Chromosomal Location of Human Ortholog: 5q24

Cellular Component: basement membrane; extracellular matrix; extracellular region; extracellular space; focal adhesion; membrane; proteinaceous extracellular matrix

Molecular Function: syndecan binding

Biological Process: axon regeneration in the peripheral nervous system; cell adhesion; negative regulation of cell adhesion; neuromuscular junction development; neuron projection development; odontogenesis of dentine-containing teeth; osteoblast differentiation; positive regulation of cell proliferation; response to ethanol; response to mechanical stimulus; response to wounding; wound healing
